LAPTOP BATTERY:Types, features and advices


     The fact is that laptop life depends of laptop battery, what means that battery is important factor when you working on laptop. Battery technology, as any other technologies, is improving all the time.
There are few types of batteries:
    - Ni-Cad (Nickel-Cadmium) laptop battery didn't offer much up-time, remember how long you had used and refuse to work longer the next time when use and poisoned the environment when disposed of improperly.
    - Ni-Cad laptop battery was replaced with NiMH (Nickel-Metal-Hydride) battery that has longer life, better efficiency and no memory problems.
    - Today’s generation of laptops uses Lithium Ion (Li-ion) batteries. Li-ion laptop battery offers a gain in efficiency over NiMH battery and has much lower discharge rate. Typical laptop battery life for standard laptop is 2 - 5 hours of light-duty use, but may drop depending of the task, as when doing power-intensive tasks.
     During time, laptop battery performance decreases whether you use it or not. Decreasing of performance of battery leads to replacement of laptop battery in one to three years, between 300 and 800 charge/recharge cycles. Some of these cycles are used when you leave battery connected on the laptop while is on AC power. On AC power, laptop routinely will "top-off" the battery when its charge reaches some predetermined levels (i.e. 95%). Working on the laptop when your laptop battery is connected on AC power it causes rising of the internal temperature of the battery. Aging process of laptop battery can be slow down and preserve some charge/recharge cycles, with removing and storing the battery to a cool and dry place. Li-ion laptop battery consists of 6, 9 or 12 lithium ion cells. These cells are wired in series and parallel to provide the voltage that is required by laptop. Individual cell of Li-ion laptop battery carries 3,6V and because that most laptop batteries have voltage rating that is an even multiple of 3,6V (usually that is 10,8V or 14,4V).
     If typical Li-ion laptop battery, at a 100% charge level, is full most od the time at 25 °C (77 °F), will lose approximately 20% capacity per year. If a battery is used in poorly ventilated laptop, will be exposed to much higer temperatures, what means that life of the battery will be more short.
     Different storage temperatures and different charge level, give different loss results:
  0 °C (32 °F) 25 °C (77 °F) 40 °C (104 °F)
Loss for 100% charge level  6% 20% 35%
Loss for 40%-60% charge level  2% 4% 15%
